Most British Columbians will tell you wine country is in the Okanagan and craft beer lives on Vancouver's east side. They're not wrong, but they're missing something. Quietly, over the last 15 years, the Township of Langley has built one of the most concentrated craft beverage scenes in BC.
It's called the Langley Loop — a network of 11 breweries, cideries, and distilleries who collaborate as much as they compete. Tim LaHay of the Barley Merchant calls it "co-opetition." During the BC liquor strike last year, Loop members supplied each other directly to keep shelves stocked. They host shared events. They cross-promote.
For visitors and locals alike, the Loop is a self-guided tasting tour. Here's how to plan one.
The South Langley anchor
- Brookswood: Brookswood Brewing Co. (4061 200th St) — Langley's newest neighbourhood brewery, opened September 2022. Try the "Tastes Like Another" caramel cream, Brookswood's signature.
- South Langley: Roots and Wings Distillery — Langley's first craft distillery. Gin, whiskey, vodka, and absinthe in a tasting room called The Drinkery. Dogs welcome on the patio.
The Aldergrove farm-country stretch
- Aldergrove: Locality Brewing — A farm-based brewery (Langley's eighth, opened 2021) with multiple outdoor picnic areas around the Brew Barn. Built for spending the afternoon, not just sampling.
- Aldergrove: Dead Frog Brewery — One of BC's original craft pioneers and a Langley fixture for years.
- Aldergrove: Fraser Valley Cider Company — The Valley's first and largest cidery. Worth the drive even if cider isn't usually your thing.
The Willowbrook cluster
- Willowbrook: Camp Beer Co. (#107-20120 64th Ave) — Adirondack chairs, glass roll-up doors, and a campfire vibe. The Loop's most patio-forward member.
- Willowbrook: Smugglers Trail Caskworks — Award-winning beers in a small, well-designed space.
- Willowbrook: Five Roads Brewing — A community-focused tasting room and a regular WassALE festival participant.
The Fort Langley finish
- Fort Langley: Trading Post Brewing — Two locations, both with dog-friendly patios. The Fort Langley eatery on Glover Road has the chicken burger that's developed a cult following.
- Walnut Grove: The Barley Merchant — The taproom that helped organize the Loop. Tim LaHay curates a rotating wall of local craft beer.
- Township: Farm Country Brewing — Housed in what used to be a supermarket, with a tasting room that fits over 100 and a heritage-farming brand identity.
Build your day
Pick three or four stops, not all 11. Plan around the region (one cluster per day), so you're not spending the afternoon driving. Wineries are a separate day altogether (Township 7, Backyard, Chaberton, and Krause are all in South Langley). Above all, line up a designated driver, take an Uber, or book a guided tour with Vine & Hops or Canadian Craft Tours. BC's drinking-and-driving rules apply to tour buses too. Don't risk it.
Eleven producers, four clusters, one self-guided afternoon. Plan it well, and you'll come back understanding why locals stopped commuting to Vancouver for a craft scene a long time ago.
