The message sat in drafts longer than it should have.
“I’ve really enjoyed this conversation. Would you be open to a quick coffee chat sometime?”
Simple. Professional. Harmless. And yet it felt risky.
What if they think I’m pitching?
What if this suddenly feels transactional?
What if I ruin a perfectly good online connection?
So it stayed unsent.
The exchange continued in small ways, a comment here, a reaction there. Eventually, it faded. Not because there wasn’t potential, but because no one moved it forward.
If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone.
Social media makes connection easy, and depth optional. We can share ideas, exchange thoughtful messages, and feel engaged. But there is a ceiling to what happens in DMs.
Online, we exchange information.
Offline, we exchange trust.
The hesitation often comes from a belief we rarely admit:
“Suggesting a call makes me look like I’m selling something.”
For professionals who value integrity and contribution, that fear is real. No one wants to turn a meaningful exchange into a pitch.
But awkwardness doesn’t come from the invitation. It comes from the absence of context.
We’ve all received the abrupt message:
“Hey, can we jump on a call?”
No shared thread. No reason. That feels transactional.
But when a conversation has substance, when someone shares a goal, a challenge, or a value, the invitation isn’t a jump. It’s a bridge.
“I’ve appreciated this exchange. It might be easier to explore this live. Would you be open to a quick chat?”
No pressure. Just continuity.
In a world full of surface interaction, real conversation stands out. Tone builds nuance. Listening builds trust. Presence builds alignment.
The next time you hesitate before pressing “send,” consider this:
If your intention is connection, not conversion, there is nothing awkward about offering space for it to grow.
Some relationships will remain online.
But the ones that matter most often begin with a simple, human invitation — and the quiet courage to send it.
