While Langley, British Columbia may be known for its agricultural heritage and suburban communities, this seemingly rural municipality is quietly establishing itself as a significant player in the global technology arena. Behind the pastoral facade of farmland and family neighborhoods, cutting-edge companies are developing revolutionary technologies that compete on the world stage.
Leading this technological transformation is Genesis Advanced Technology, based in Langley, which uses inventive and bold mechanical design to disrupt a broad range of sectors including oil and gas, clean energy, medical devices, and robotics. Founded in 2015 by Michael Gibney and James Klassen with 50+ employees, the company has raised more than $28 million from angel investors. Their breakthrough LiveDrive actuator technology promises to revolutionize how robots move by responding like human joints.
Perhaps even more impressive is the presence of world-renowned robotics companies testing their innovations in Langley's retail spaces. Sanctuary AI successfully deployed its humanoid general-purpose robot at a Mark's retail store in Langley, completing 110 tasks including packing merchandise, stacking shelves, cleaning, labelling and folding. This deployment represents a significant milestone in practical robotics applications.
The area also hosts Nexera Robotics, which is focused on solving one of the most challenging problems in all of robotics – the grasping of diverse goods, a crucial advancement for industrial automation.
While specific quantum computing companies weren't identified directly in Langley, British Columbia hosts around eight quantum technology firms among Canada's 60+ quantum companies, including world-leading firms such as D-Wave Systems and Photonic Inc. The proximity to Vancouver's quantum ecosystem positions Langley companies to potentially integrate quantum technologies into their operations.
This concentration of advanced robotics, AI, and mechanical innovation companies demonstrates that technological leadership isn't confined to traditional urban tech hubs. Langley's unique combination of affordable real estate, proximity to Vancouver's talent pool, and business-friendly environment has created an unexpected hotbed of innovation. As these companies continue to grow and attract global attention, Langley is proving that revolutionary technology can emerge from the most unlikely places.
