What began as a routine flight from Montreal ended in heartbreak at New York’s LaGuardia Airport, an incident now defined not just by investigation details, but by the lives lost and the futures that will never unfold.
Air Canada Express Flight AC8646 was nearing the end of its journey when it collided with an airport fire vehicle on the runway. While dozens of passengers survived, many with injuries, the tragedy claimed the lives of two pilots: Captain Antoine Forest and First Officer Mackenzie Gunther.
For those who knew them, they were more than names in a headline.
Captain Forest, from Coteau-du-Lac, Quebec, had spent years pursuing his dream of flight. Friends describe him as focused, disciplined, and deeply committed to aviation from a young age. Flying wasn’t just a career; it was his identity. He had worked his way through the ranks, building experience and earning respect among peers who saw him as both capable and calm under pressure.
Beside him in the cockpit was First Officer Mackenzie Gunther, at the very beginning of what promised to be a remarkable career. A recent graduate of Seneca Polytechnic’s aviation program, Gunther had quickly transitioned from student to commercial pilot through a competitive pathway program. Those close to him recall his enthusiasm, humility, and relentless drive to succeed in the skies.
Together, they represented two ends of the same journey, experience and ambition, united by a shared love of aviation.
In the days since the crash, tributes have poured in from across Canada’s aviation community. Former instructors, colleagues, and friends have shared stories not of the tragedy, but of the passion both men carried into every flight.
As investigators work to determine how a runway collision could turn fatal, the human cost remains at the forefront. Behind every aviation incident are lives, families, and dreams; reminders that safety failures are never just technical.
And in this case, the skies feel a little quieter without them.
