Six significant earthquakes in just 24 hours have captured the world's attention, leaving many people asking the same question: Is this normal, or is something bigger happening?
While the number of earthquakes in such a short period may sound alarming, geologists say our planet is constantly moving. Earth experiences thousands of earthquakes every day; most are too small to be felt. However, when several moderate to major earthquakes occur within hours of each other, it's understandable that people begin looking for a connection.
What Causes an Earthquake?
Earthquakes occur when stress builds up along fractures in the Earth's crust called faults. The Earth's outer shell is made up of massive tectonic plates that are constantly moving, although usually only a few centimetres each year. As these plates collide, slide past one another, or pull apart, pressure builds until the rocks suddenly break or slip. That rapid release of energy sends seismic waves through the ground, creating an earthquake.
Nearly 75% of the world's active volcanoes and about 90% of the world's earthquakes occur around the Pacific Ring of Fire, a horseshoe-shaped belt stretching around the Pacific Ocean. This region includes the west coasts of North and South America, Alaska, Japan, Indonesia, New Zealand, and many Pacific islands. The constant interaction of tectonic plates makes it the most seismically active zone on Earth.
What Happened During the Past 24 Hours?
Among the most significant events were two powerful earthquakes that struck Venezuela only seconds apart; a rare seismic "doublet." The first measured magnitude 7.2, followed less than a minute later by a magnitude 7.5. The twin quakes caused widespread destruction, particularly along Venezuela's northern coast near Caracas, where buildings collapsed, infrastructure was heavily damaged, and rescue crews continue searching for survivors.
Other notable earthquakes occurred in regions including Northern California, Japan, Alaska, Indonesia, and the South Pacific—areas that are all accustomed to seismic activity because they lie along active plate boundaries.
Are These Earthquakes Connected?
The short answer is probably not.
Although the earthquakes occurred close together in time, scientists say there is no evidence they were triggered by one another across such vast distances. The Venezuela earthquakes were connected to each other because they occurred on the same fault system, only moments apart. However, the earthquakes in California, Japan, Alaska, and other regions happened on separate tectonic boundaries thousands of kilometres away. Experts say their timing is considered coincidental rather than part of a global chain reaction.
While very large earthquakes can occasionally influence seismic activity nearby, they rarely trigger major earthquakes on the opposite side of the planet.
Should We Be Concerned?
These events serve as a reminder that Earth is a dynamic planet. Living near active fault lines means earthquakes are inevitable, but advances in engineering, building codes, and emergency preparedness have significantly reduced risks in many parts of the world.
If you live in an earthquake-prone area, it's always wise to have an emergency kit, know safe places to take cover, and have a family communication plan.
Preparedness goes beyond food, water, and emergency kits. Natural disasters can also lead to insurance disputes, contractor issues, and even identity theft. LegalShield and IDShield provide affordable access to legal advice and identity protection, helping you safeguard your family before the unexpected happens.
The Bottom Line
Six earthquakes in one day may sound extraordinary, but they are also a reminder of the incredible forces constantly shaping our planet. While the timing of these events has sparked worldwide curiosity, scientists say the evidence points to coincidence rather than a single global event.
Nature never stands still, and neither should our commitment to understanding it. Staying informed and prepared remains the best defence when the ground beneath us decides to move.
